Fitness | The Truth about Detoxing

So there's been a lot of talk going around about detoxing, or some juice cleanses. But what's the truth? Does it really work? And what's it like to spend days only imbibing juices?

Here's the skinny:
  • Cons:
    • Cleanses are a bit pricey. If you're in a pinch, then now might not be the best time to splurge on buying the components to a cleanse. On average they can cost anywhere from $45 per day to $75 per day. Instead you might want to consider produce from a local farmer's market and try juicing yourself.
    • Bottled juice cleanses have a ton of sugar in them, according toEveryday Health,. Although fresh fruit juice is natural, it will still send your energy levels soaring. This is why most people on a juice cleanse tend to crash in the late afternoon. Having a protein drink will help regulate your blood sugar, but it is still not healthy to have this much sugar.
    • Working out is difficult. It's difficult to get your cardio fix because of the energy is just not there. It's also difficult to get back into regular workout routine after the cleanse, because of the lack of strength.
    • Cleansing is not a solution for long-term weight loss. If you are looking to shed a few pounds permanently, then a juice cleanse is not the answer. Drinking juice all day might help you to loose some water weight, according to The Huffington Post, but you might gain those pounds back post-cleanse when your body starts retaining calories from solid food again.
    • Pros:
      • You will definitely feel hydrated!  Most people when not drinking their cleanse, are guzzling the good stuff -- being water! Make it a goal to finish a 1.5 liter bottle of water each day in order to feel full and flush out any extra toxins. This will help to enhance the  glow your skin will feel on the third day.
      • Cleansing gives your body a rest from digestion, according to Livestrong. Our bodies are used to breaking down and digesting food all day, every day, for years and years. So once in a while, it’s nice to give your body a break by only consuming nutrient-rich fluids. Especially if you are a junk food junkie, a cleanse will help reset your system and flush out tons of toxins. (Just make sure to eat mostly vegan in the days leading up to your cleanse or else you might be in for a pretty harsh change.)
      • Because most bottled, pressed juice cleanses use fruit juice along with vegetable juice, it's common that most individuals wanted nothing to do with sweets when they finished day 3 of the cleanse. The sugar cravings were gone!
      • One of the biggest benefits found from completing the cleanse was that it motivates you to stay on a healthy path for weeks afterward. Mentally, after feeling so rejuvenated by the 3 days spent cleansing the last thing you want to do is throw it all away.
Overall, the juice cleanse is a positive experience for most. I think that cleansing for 3 days is plenty of time—I would not suggest doing a longer cleanse because, according to Women’s Health, your body goes into starvation mode after about 4 days.

Fitness | 5 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Boosting your metabolism isn't as daunting as it seems, when you break it down to 5 simple to-do's! All of our bodies metabolize in different ways, but there are a few sure ways you can rely on to get your calories burning and your metabolism pumping! From early morning workouts, to better food choices, you can give your metabolism that extra push without too much effort!
Here are a few simple ways:
    1. Eat Breakfast! The worst thing you can do to kick-start your day (and your metabolism) is skip breakfast. Click here for Lauren Conrad's complete breakfast breakdown.
    2. Get Moving in the Morning.  Not all of us are capable of waking up early to get our bodies moving and burning calories. However, if you do happen to be one of those early morning risers (eek!) then you should definitely try to get a quick run, or maybe workout session completed in this morning. This will help to get those calories burning early, and keep them burning throughout the day.
    3. Drink Up! If you happen to be even a tad bit thirsty, you run the risk of slowing your metabolism. It's been rumored that cold water actually helps to spark your metabolism because your body is working harder to heat up that h2o. If you happen to like it, green tea is also a great alternative.
    4. Have Whole Grains, Not Multigrain. Complex carbs and fiber-rich foods help to speed up your metabolism. Whole grains are good, multigrains are not. If anything, just remember that!
    5. Eat More, Smaller Meals. According to WebMD, if you divide your meals up into smaller portions so you eat more often throughout the day, your metabolism won’t have a chance to take a break. However, this absolutely does not mean to stuff your face 24/7. Instead, try to eat smaller bites throughout the day instead of three large meals. Click here for Lauren Conrad's favorite fat-burning snacks that are perfect for this tip!

    Citrus Cleanse Water

    Citrus Cleanse Water

I've been a detox water kind of path as of lately, and I must say this citrus water is quickly becoming a favorite. I love the tang of the citrus with the ice cold of the water. Perfect pair for hot summer days such as these in South Florida.

    Gym Bag Must Haves

    Gym Bag Must Haves

The essentials in my gym bag. These are my go-to items I cannot be without while I'm at the gym. Hair ties, chic water bottle, deodorant, and baby wipes -- all items which come in handy pre- and post- workout.

    Sporty Style

    Sporty Style

I call them my gym essentials.

I'm one of those train all in black -- be ready for my funeral kind of work out girls. My preference is to always have leggings which run all the way to the ankles, with black socks and sneakers. Paired with a black tank top of choice, and black sports bra. All accessories (watch, gym bag, gym gloves) are also dressed in black.

    Diary: Carb Cycling, v. II

    Leg Day

Plum is wearing -- [Old Navy Active Leggings and Sports Bra, Nike Free Runs, Baby-G Watch, FTP Live Love Lift Tank]
Josie is wearing -- [Old Navy Active Legging and workout tank, Jordans sneakers, Victoria Secret Active Sports Bra]

3 sets of 20 Bulgarian Split Squats each leg

Warm Up: 1 lap around the track with the following squat sets: Jump squats, Side squats, Lunges, Side squat laterals

Mario's sled pushes with 70 lb worth of plates -- 3 sets 1/2 track

3 sets of 10 squats with 35 lb plates on each side

    3 sets of wall sits with a 10 lb. plate, 30 sec/45/45

    3 sets of Burpee/Mountain Climbers 30 sec/45/45

I have never felt so hungry in my life. And it's not even that I'm hungry or lacking protein intake. I'm eating a meal every 2 hours!! And yet, the yawning hunger in my stomach is from sugars withdrawal -- scary isn't it? To think what we put in our bodies on a daily basis.

    JUNK.

And for the holy mother of all gods I just want a piece of bread, smothered in f-ing cheese!

I was told this would happen. That I would be a raging lunatic frantic for some carbs. And yet, I am determined to see this through. I will admit to having a weak moment yesterday, and giving into the temptation of lovely cooked latin food -- fried cheese and all.

But today I am back on my grind. And I am starting to see results as early as 4 days into my carb cycling diet.

    Today's workout was leg day
    ass to grass
    squat your life away
     and die.

    {not really}

But let me tell you, that was intense. Because I am forcing my body to extract its energy from its current carb content, the workout is more physically intense, and I can literally feel the fat melting off my body.

Let's see how much hangrier I can get.

Day 2 of our fitness diary.

It's always been difficult for me to see anything through and to dedicate myself to fitness. So how I fell down this rabbit hole, I will never be sure? But when I got to Wonderland, Alice discovered her inner gym rat.

And yes, it has officially become one of the best parts of my day. The one hour I spend getting the ass whooping from hell by personal trainer Mario -- is easily the best pain I have ever experienced in my short 25 years of life.

I don't feel like a lazy fat lard anymore.
A flight of stairs no longer seems daunting.
    I've become active.

I've become a better version of myself.

But, the journey isn't over yet. And the evolution of who I am and who I hope to be are diverging on this path.

So, of course, Mario has amped up the game and introduced Carb Cycling.

Holy Misery do I miss my carbs and cheese.

Stay tuned in this diary series to enjoy my misery in Carb Cycling.

    Fitness Finds

My current fad? Health and Fitness.

I am currently on a mission to not only reshape my personal lifestyle {currently being: lazy} to one with more physical activity, and healthier lifestyle choices.

Currently my eating habits are less than healthy [extremely unhealthy] which seems to stem from my complete lack of self control. The way my mind currently functions: If I want it, I get it. Which is the same motto I have for shoveling food into the endless abyss that is my stomach.

But soon to change. I am currently on a mission to reshape my lifestyle and opt for healthier choices.

The Green Smoothie Bible is a great place to start in my opinion. The text will provide you with health and fitness insights for those of us that are less than knowledgeable in the larger world of healthy eating. My number one problem in the past was having to chew vegetables (this sounds extremely childish yet true) and when I discovered the beauty of the green smoothie, a new hope arose on the horizon.

The book gives more than 300 recipes for blending both fruits and vegetables into your daily diet.

After training with a personal trainer at LA Fitness for more than 5 months -- it's time to step my game up. I have achieved a level of fitness which has gotten me off the couch and into physical activity {a nice pat on the back thank you, this was a difficult feat}.

My trainer (contact info listed below) -- has now suggested a diet plan wrought with vegetables and fruit. The Green Smoothie Bible has now become my companion. In the hour where snacking might sneak up, or in those instances which you need a power push to the end of the day -- the never ending combinations of fruits and vegetables is exactly what is needed.

Stay tuned for my health and fitness updates!
